Once upon a time in 2006, deep in a boiler room, Vlad Platek and I identified a market need for easy-to-use monitoring and control solutions that catered to small and medium-sized buildings.
Certainly, companies like Honeywell, Johnson Controls, and Siemens existed for larger buildings in the market, but their solutions were too expensive to implement and too complicated to use down-market.
SensorSuite® (www.sensorsuite.com) started as an Internet of Things (IOT) company involved in the capture, processing, and delivery of real-time building information to stakeholders in the multi-residential, commercial, industrial markets.
What is IoT and BIoT?
The Internet of Things: IoT- that memorable acronym that refers to what many feel is going to be the next iteration of the Digital Revolution.
The early Internet consisted of simple HTML web pages, accessible to only a few. Rich media came next. Then, it evolved into business application development and mobility- making the Internet easily accessible to many.
Today, IoT refers to a computing concept that describes a new era where every day physical objects are connected to the Internet that are able to identify themselves to other devices. In turn, several empowered devices are now capable of being monitored and controlled.
This new age is significant because an object that can represent itself digitally becomes something greater than the object by itself. Now acting in unison, ambient intelligence is here- connecting many objects and database data.
To clarify and further define how the IoT is going to impact the commercial, corporate, government and institutional real estate industries, many have decided to add a “B” to the acronym for BUILDINGS.
The BIoT™ stands for BUILDINGS Internet of Things™ a market segment that focus on all the components in a building that could be connected to the Internet for the purpose of realizing the following:
- Operational efficiency.
- Reduction in the consumption of energy.
- Improvement in the occupant experience.
- Sustainability objectives.
- A better financial performance of assets (increasing Net Operating Income and subsequently building valuation).
SensorSuite by Design
Considering the huge list of equipment, machines and devices found in buildings, SensorSuite focuses its attention on legacy HVAC products that support buildings.
In the Canadian HVAC landscape, the time for action is now.
As hydro prices increase and the socio-political culture shifts towards an urgency to address climate change, SensorSuite aspires to be the leading retrofitter of legacy building equipment and machines- empowering them with a dose of today’s technology.
Nationally, the main reason that it is important to transform our existing building stock to these smart buildings or BIoT™ standards is quite simple. We want to operate buildings in the most cost-effective manner. We want them to save on energy, be responsible with our resources- making sure that its occupants are safe, happy, and comfortable, and essentially, operate more profitably.
This is the new way to think about real estate.
Connecting traditionally unconnected equipment and machines- monitoring, analyzing and controlling business processes without much human intervention, will lead to the improved management of assets and translate into happier occupants and improved profitability.
At SensorSuite, we’re excited about what’s possible in our new connected world and we accept the responsibility of educating the masses and leading the case for change in the markets that we serve.
More than just a roof and walls, buildings serve our needs for shelter, security, living space, privacy, storage of belongings, and to comfortably live and work.
Helping a building manage its goal of looking after the people inside them while acting as a responsible steward to the world outside its doors is why SensorSuite is in business.
